"If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books."
Roald Dahl
Hello, I'm Jayne Crowley, and teaching English has always been my greatest passion.
As an avid reader, I have always loved the way a story can transport you into wonderful new worlds, spark your imagination and stay with you long after you've turned the final page. My favourite book as a child was The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton. Every time I headed outside on an adventure, I imagined climbing the Faraway Tree and meeting all of the magical characters who lived within it. Those stories inspired countless adventures of my own and ignited a lifelong love of reading.
Throughout my 27 years in education, one of the greatest joys of my career has been listening to children excitedly recommend their favourite books, hearing them retell memorable moments and discussing characters, themes and plots in incredible detail. There is something truly magical about seeing a child discover a book that captures their imagination and develops a genuine love of reading.
This passion naturally led me to explore and research the most effective ways to teach children to become confident, successful writers. I firmly believe that children learn best when they see writing brought to life. I love modelling my own writing, sharing the thinking process behind every sentence and demonstrating that all writers draft, edit, refine and improve their work. Watching children grow in confidence, experiment with ambitious vocabulary and discover their own unique writing voice is one of the most rewarding parts of my role.
Leading English across our school is a privilege. My ambition is for every child to leave us as a confident reader, an expressive writer and, most importantly, someone who understands that books have the power to inspire, challenge, comfort and change lives. If we can nurture a lifelong love of reading and writing in every child, we will have given them a gift that will stay with them forever.
